AMARAVATI, AUGUST 16, 2026: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to give top priority to drinking water supplies as the state faces deficient rainfall and to prepare a comprehensive Water Movement Plan for managing available water resources.

At a review meeting with the Water Resources Department at the Secretariat on Friday, Naidu sought an action plan to make the best possible use of water stored in reservoirs and tanks, along with available groundwater.

Naidu directed officials to:

Construct access roads to the dam site.

Develop infrastructure required for future dam maintenance.

Address local concerns relating to the Gandi Poshamma temple.

Complete the remaining Left Canal works up to Visakhapatnam by March next year.

He also asked officials to fill water bodies, reservoirs and tanks along the route up to Anakapalli.

CANAL CAPACITY

Naidu directed officials to design both the Right and Left Canals to handle 17,500 cusecs.

He also suggested giving names to the two canals.

WATER FOR INDUSTRY AND DATA CENTRES

The Chief Minister said around 3.5 TMC of water would be sufficient for data centres, rejecting what he described as criticism over their water requirements.

He asked officials to communicate the figure clearly to the public while ensuring that drinking water supplies remain the state's primary concern.

At the same time, he directed officials to ensure that industrial water requirements are not unnecessarily disrupted.

FARMERS URGED TO SAVE WATER

Naidu appealed to farmers to avoid water-intensive crops during the current season in view of the rainfall situation.

He also asked officials to continue programmes such as Jala Dhara and Jala Harathi to strengthen groundwater levels.

GODAVARI WATER AND INLAND WATERWAYS

The Chief Minister said the state could explore diverting Godavari water towards North Andhra and the Krishna delta.

He also proposed examining the feasibility of developing inland waterway connectivity between Visakhapatnam and Amaravati.

VELIGONDA AND OTHER PROJECTS

Naidu directed officials to accelerate completion of the Veligonda project and address the concerns of displaced families with sensitivity.

For the 36 priority projects, he instructed officials to establish monthly targets and monitor progress.

He also asked officials to examine the feasibility of supplying water to the downstream ayacut of the Annamayya project.

NEW DELHI/AMARAVATI, AUGUST 16, 2026: The Supreme Court has declined to interfere with an Andhra Pradesh High Court judgment quashing a 2021 criminal case against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana concerning alleged irregularities in the Amaravati land pooling scheme.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, refused to entertain a challenge filed by former YSRCP MLA Alla Rama Krishna Reddy against the High Court's July 15 judgment.

However, the Supreme Court clarified that the High Court ruling would not affect any other cases, which must be considered separately on their own facts and merits.

WHAT HAPPENED

Senior advocate Ranjit Kumar, representing Rama Krishna Reddy, argued that the allegations concerned alleged irregularities involving around 30,000 acres and more than 25,000 farmers.

The Chief Justice said the court remained concerned about farmers' interests and indicated that their legitimate entitlements would be protected.

At the same time, the Bench questioned the foundation of the criminal proceedings, noting that the case had been initiated by a political rival and that no farmer had approached the court with a complaint.

The CJI observed that political disputes should not be pursued through criminal litigation.

THE 2021 CASE

The FIR was registered on March 12, 2021, under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act following a complaint by then Mangalagiri MLA Alla Rama Krishna Reddy.

The CID investigation named Naidu, Narayana and others as accused and invoked provisions of the IPC, SC/ST Act and Assigned Lands Act.

Naidu and Narayana subsequently approached the High Court seeking quashing of the proceedings.

AMARAVATI LAND POOLING SCHEME

The dispute relates to the Amaravati land pooling scheme, under which agricultural land was voluntarily pooled for the development of the proposed capital instead of being acquired through conventional compulsory acquisition.

Under the scheme, eligible farmers surrendering agricultural land were to receive developed residential and commercial plots, subject to the applicable provisions.

Government records cited in the case stated that 28,181 landowners across 25 villages contributed 35,215 acres of private agricultural land.

ALLEGATIONS

The complaint alleged that the government subsequently modified aspects of the land pooling framework to extend benefits to certain categories of assigned land.

The allegations included claims that:

Benefits were allegedly extended to certain private individuals and encroachers.

Poor and marginalised landholders were allegedly disadvantaged.

Some SC and ST farmers were allegedly misled or pressured.

Intermediaries allegedly exploited concerns surrounding assigned land.

The alleged actions resulted in losses to affected landholders.

These remain allegations and were the subject of the criminal proceedings.

WHY THE HIGH COURT QUASHED THE FIR

The Andhra Pradesh High Court examined whether government policy decisions and executive orders connected with the Amaravati land pooling framework could constitute a criminal conspiracy.

The court considered the APCRDA Act, 2014, which provided for land pooling as an alternative to compulsory acquisition.

Justice Y. Lakshmana Rao held that treating government policy decisions and government orders as criminal conspiracy was legally unsustainable in the circumstances of the case.

The High Court concluded that the Amaravati decisions had passed through governmental processes and had legislative backing.

It consequently held that the FIR lacked sufficient legal foundation and was affected by mala fides and alleged political vendetta, and quashed Crime No. 5 of 2021 registered by the CID at Amaravati, Mangalagiri.

SUPREME COURT'S POSITION

The Supreme Court's latest decision leaves the High Court's order undisturbed.

However, the Bench specifically clarified that the judgment does not automatically determine the outcome of any other proceedings connected with the broader Amaravati land or related issues.

Those matters, if pending, will have to be assessed independently according to their facts and legal merits.

The immediate criminal proceedings covered by the High Court's quashing order remain unaffected by the Supreme Court's refusal to interfere.

Any separate cases or proceedings concerning Amaravati land pooling will continue to be considered independently, in accordance with the Supreme Court's clarification.

AMARAVATI, AUGUST 16, 2026: Andhra Pradesh has strengthened its firefighting and emergency-response capacity with the addition of 58 new vehicles worth around ₹40 crore.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu flagged off the vehicles on the Seed Access Road on Friday as part of the state's ongoing effort to modernise the Fire Services Department.

The vehicles were procured using funds from the 15th Finance Commission.

NEW FLEET

The newly introduced fleet comprises three major categories:

25 advanced firefighting vehicles costing ₹18.68 crore

20 water bowsers costing ₹14.79 crore

13 quick-response multipurpose firefighting vehicles costing ₹6.37 crore

Officials said the new vehicles would improve response times during fires, accidents and other emergencies.

WATER BOWSERS

Each of the 20 water bowsers has a capacity of 14,000 litres.

The additional water supply is expected to help firefighters during prolonged operations, particularly in urban and industrial areas where local water sources can be quickly depleted during major fires.

QUICK-RESPONSE VEHICLES

The 13 multipurpose vehicles are designed to operate in narrow and congested locations, where larger firefighting vehicles may face difficulties reaching emergency sites.

The advanced firefighting vehicles are also expected to improve access to incidents in rural and forest areas.

GOVERNMENT'S MODERNISATION PLAN

Naidu said the government was modernising the Fire Services Department in phases.

According to the Chief Minister, the state has planned procurement of modern firefighting vehicles and equipment at a total estimated cost of ₹252.86 crore, using both Central and state funds.

The government had already deployed 65 fire tenders in the first phase, at a cost of ₹33 crore.

The 58 vehicles flagged off on Friday constitute the second phase.

Naidu said additional fire tenders and equipment would be introduced during the third phase.

FIRE STATION INFRASTRUCTURE

The modernisation programme also covers fire-station infrastructure.

The government is constructing 17 new fire station buildings across Andhra Pradesh, with an estimated cost of ₹2.25 crore per building.

Officials said construction of six buildings has already been completed.

The government is also undertaking the modernisation of 36 existing fire stations.

The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department has issued orders allowing Aadhaar Authentication Services, including Yes/No authentication and e-KYC where applicable, through ULB online portals.

Are unable to complete the Aadhaar authentication process.

Addressing the Independence Day celebrations in Amaravati after hoisting the National Flag and receiving the guard of honour, Naidu said the Swarnandhra vision was aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broader goal of “Viksit Bharat”.

DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

Naidu said Andhra Pradesh's growth rate had increased to 11.3%.

₹8,269 crore was saved through measures aimed at reducing the state's interest burden.

₹1.50 lakh crore was spent on welfare programmes.

₹1.34 lakh crore was spent on development.

Investment agreements worth ₹24 lakh crore have been signed.

The approved investments have the potential to generate around 11 lakh jobs.

Naidu also said Foreign Direct Investment increased six-and-a-half times over two years, citing investments and projects involving companies including Google, ArcelorMittal, JSW Steel, Dalmia Cement, AM Green, Hero and Royal Enfield, along with the ₹95,000-crore BPCL project.

EMPLOYMENT PUSH

The state government has set a target of creating 20 lakh jobs over the next five years, according to Naidu.

He said 15,941 vacancies had been filled through Mega DSC, while teacher recruitment would be conducted annually.

A separate job calendar covering 10,000 vacancies has also been released, he said.

IRRIGATION AND POLAVARAM

Naidu highlighted irrigation development as another major priority.

The government has spent around ₹25,000 crore on irrigation projects over 26 months, he said, with 36 major projects worth ₹35,000 crore targeted for completion within three years.

The Chief Minister said work on the Polavaram project had reached 89%.

He also referred to the Veligonda project, Vamsadhara-Nagavali interlinking and Uttarandhra Sujala Sravanthi among the major irrigation initiatives.

HYDERABAD, AUGUST 16, 2026: Jubilee Hills police have detained a trainee pilot and a software engineer following a raid at Redwood Residency on Road No. 6 in Kakatiya Hills, Madhapur, where officers seized suspected hydroponic cannabis and other narcotics.

The action was reportedly based on information received by police about suspected drug consumption at the premises.

WHAT HAPPENED

Police identified the detained individuals as Kabir Minocha, who was undergoing pilot training and also working as a gym trainer, and Talari Hemanth, a software engineer.

According to police, the two were allegedly found consuming marijuana during the raid.

Officers seized:

80 grams of suspected hydroponic cannabis

15 grams of suspected narcotic substance

The seized substances will be subject to the applicable legal and forensic process.

A case has been registered under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
